Icelandic nouns with pictures and declension tables

This box contains flash cards of 1000 common nouns of all Icelandic declension paradigms together with their German and English translations. On the front side of each card you will find the respective illustrated noun. On the back you will find the declension of the noun with and without the article. In addition, the front side draws attention to which vowel changes, contractions and consonant insertions to apply when declining.

The nouns are arranged by their grammatical gender in declension classes. The endings of the nominative and genitive singular as well the nominative plural were the decisive factors in choosing this arrangement. Nouns with the same or a very similar paradigm/pattern are grouped into one class. They are not arranged according to the frequency of their occurrence in everyday language usage but in alphabetical order. Nouns with different meanings are generally only listed with their most common meaning.

Vocabulary books for Icelandic classes

These books focus exclusively on vocabulary acquisition. In the various books, selected topics are conveyed through images and assignments and practiced through the use of various tasks. By frequent writing and usage of the vocabulary, the Icelandic student is supported in learning.

The vocabulary is limited to a fixed basic vocabulary, which the learner will come across not only in daily life in Iceland but also in Icelandic classes. The gender of the words is always shown. The student is also required to deal with the plural forms and the area of application of each new word. In addition, there are words derived from the basic vocabulary (i.e. verbs), whereby extended vocabulary is built upon the basic vocabulary in an integrated way, making it easy for the student to expand their vocabulary.

Description

This book is a grammar exercise book for adults learning Icelandic with a teacher or through self-study. Contrary to conventional grammars, this book is not divided into chapters according to word types but according to the assumed gradual language level of the learner. For this reason, the chapters build on each other and provide exercises on more complex grammatical topics gradually. The main subject matter is the contemporary Icelandic language in its forms and syntax for beginners and advanced learners. The focus is on regularities and a selection of some important deviations or exceptions. The exercise book is designed to help the learner correctly apply previously learned grammatical material with various exercises. A free audio download is offered for the pronunciation chapter. There is an answer key for all exercises at the end of the book.

In this first volume, students learn the basic linguistic skills of the declension of nouns, adjectives, pronouns and number words as well as the conjugation of verbs in the present tense and selected verbs in the past tense.

The exercises are in Icelandic and English, with examples to help the learner complete the exercise correctly. At the beginning of each chapter there is a grammatical focus, which is then dealt with in more detail. After each exercise, there is a list of grammatical topics that the student should know in order to solve the task. Sometimes short explanations are given if the exercise has a particular objective.

The level of the exercises corresponds to A1 – A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
